Nami Lewis
Nami Lewis is the current Guardian of Manitas, the ancient Primal Kaimon who controls the oceans surrounding Leeore. As the Lightkeeper of the Olive City Lighthouse, Nami’s daily duty involves ensuring the lighthouse's beam shines across the sea, reflecting off Manitas' shell to create a magical display that comforts the Primal and prevents it from falling into despair. Though Nami maintains a cheerful and optimistic front for those around her, she struggles internally with feelings of loneliness, depression, and a search for purpose in her life. Her close psychic bond with Manitas has deepened this emotional struggle, as both share a deep-seated grief over Manitas' centuries of existence.
Appearance & Personality
Nami has long blue hair that she will often tie up in a ponytail. Although she changes outfits from day to day, she wears the official robes of the Lightkeeper as a large, black seaman's jacket. The white cap is something she herself decided would look nice as other Lighthouse Keepers didn't wear a cap.
To others, Nami appears as an optimistic and kind-hearted individual who encourages people to find joy in life’s simple pleasures. She often hides her own pain, preferring to keep up a positive front. However, beneath her cheerful exterior, Nami battles with lingering feelings of depression and a deep sense of purposelessness. She struggles to find her own sense of belonging, despite being given the critical responsibility of Guardian. Her fear of burdening others and being misunderstood makes it difficult for her to ask for help, even when she needs it most.
Nami also displays a natural cleverness and sharp instincts, particularly when it comes to understanding others’ emotions and motivations. She’s highly strategic in battle, especially when fighting alongside her Kaimon, and is known for predicting her opponent’s next moves with ease.
Backstory
Nami's life took a tragic turn early on when she and her sister Bonney Lewis lost their parents in a shipwreck caused by an Glaucon. Left to the care of their grandmother, Nami quickly took on the role of protector for her sister, trying to shield Bonney from the pain of their loss. She often went to great lengths to cheer up Bonney, even resorting to small acts of theft and mischief to bring her joy, such as sneaking them into events or stealing ice cream.
Her life changed forever when she snuck into the Olive City Lighthouse as a child, only to be discovered by Amos, the previous Guardian of Manitas. Sensing Nami's natural connection to the ocean Primal, Amos revealed to her the sacred duty of the Guardian. After witnessing her immediate ability to locate Manitas deep beneath the sea, Amos knew Nami was destined to succeed him. Though initially excited by this new responsibility, Nami was soon devastated by Amos' death, after he tragically took his own life, unable to bear the burden of his isolation any longer.
Despite her youth, Nami stepped into the role of Guardian, keeping the lighthouse lit and maintaining her bond with Manitas. However, the weight of her duty, combined with her shared psychic connection to Manitas’ sorrow, began to take a toll. Though her sister and grandmother eventually moved in to live with her, offering some companionship, Nami still struggles with feelings of loneliness and doubts about her purpose.
Role as Guardian
Nami’s bond with Manitas is crucial to Leeore’s well-being. The ancient Primal, once a source of joy and peace, has grown melancholic over the centuries, and its powerful emotional influence could overwhelm the entire region if unchecked. As Guardian, Nami’s duty is to keep it calm and prevent it from falling into despair.
The Olive City Lighthouse plays a critical role in this process. Each night, Nami ensures the lighthouse is lit, its beam connecting with Manitas’ shell to create a magical illusion that reflects a vision where all of Manitas' past Guardians are still with it. This ritual helps Manitas cope with its isolation and prevents it from projecting its grief onto the rest of the world.
Relationships
- Bonney Lewis: Nami’s younger sister, who she adores and has spent much of her life trying to protect and cheer up. Bonney has a deep bond with Nami and often disguises herself as her older sister to help Nami evade the overprotective Olive City Rangers, giving her some much-needed privacy.
- Grandmother: After their parents’ death, Nami and Bonney were raised by their grandmother. She provides Nami with emotional support and stability in the face of her responsibilities as Guardian.
- Manitas: The powerful Primal Kaimon and Nami’s closest companion. Their bond is both a source of comfort and sorrow, as Nami shares in Manitas’ deep, centuries-long depression. Despite this, they find solace in each other, and Nami’s dedication to keeping Manitas emotionally stable is a central part of her role as Guardian.
- Caeso Wake: The Captain of the Olive City Rangers, Caeso Wake, is overprotective of Nami, often smothering her with unwanted attention. Though he claims to be acting in her best interest, Nami is keenly aware that Caeso’s need to protect her stems more from his own ego than genuine care, which frustrates her and adds to her feelings of being trapped.
